A really refreshing new take on an established classic vampire horror ttrpg
Im a long time fan the vampire genre, (films, comics, tv shows, art, novels). Ive also been a long time player and GM for the table top role playing game Vampire the Masquerade since Revised edition, (played a lot including Werewolf the Apocalypse through the late 90's and 2000's). I was primarily the story teller for our D&D gaming group and of all the various vampire themed game Ive played this one had the richest lore; a beautifully crafted and gothic world of personal horror, a world very much like our own but darker, more sinister, (called the World of Darkness where other monsters exist, such as ghosts, mages and werewolves). I kind of left the game after I started playing more D&D, but always there was this love for horror games, (such as Call of Cthulhu). Then I heard that White Wolf, the company that published VtM folded and went under, then some MMO video game company bought it then basically neglected their tenure of this game/IP. I heard that a new edition was being developed back in 2018 but didnt know much about what had been changed. I knew that Onyx Path had published a huge Omnibus edition called 20th Anniversary, but though I played a bit of it it felt really dense and encyclopedic. Fast forward to February 2020 and I started reading some great reviews of this new 5th edition, (along with a few articles of some anti-LGBTQ controversy that Paradox thankfully had resolved). I decided to buy the core book and was immediately caught up in the sheer beauty of the book, the color, the realistic photographs of models depicting some of the most iconic vampires from the 20+ years of the game line; it really updated the setting dramatically. In fact, I immediately loved that it felt like I was reading a secret dossier of documents chronicling the lives of these secret monsters and their political backstabbing; it was glossy, like a fashion magazine. Rules wise this book is packed, it contains everything you need to play and run the game; (though a minor critique is that the rules are scattered throughout the book rather than condensed to a single chapter, but its a minor gripe). So after a few months of picking this book I felt ready to get back to telling stories and have started two V5 groups (both on Discord which has a huge VtM gaming community due to COVID19). Im now getting ready to start a 3rd game set in the Dark Ages. So in short, this game has re-kindled my passion for vampire and in particular for Vampire the Masquerade and cannot wait for the other books being released next year, (one is called Cults of the Blood Gods). And if you do pick this up and start a game, welcome to the vamily :-)
