Was the IP even necessary?
If you like Smash up, you'd like this stand-alone expansion. It's the same successful formula. It's just ironic that this expansion features licensed versions of characters they've already lampooned in previous releases. Like the Disney expansion, this did not need to exist. I'd much rather they stuck to mocking IP's than releasing actual IP content.

A great game Marvel-fied.
Smash-Up is a fantastic shuffle-building game where you take two decks and “smash†them together to make the deck you use for the game. This is a great intro to deck builders and adding Marvel really makes sense with a lot of the factions that already exist.

Great expansion (with a caveat)
The latest expansion of Smash Up adds eight new factions from the Marvel universe to the roster. This expansion (as all others) can be used as a standalone game as well. The new factions are fun and varied. Caveat: For the very first time ever there's a discrepancy between the components from this set and all other Smash Up sets. Card size and stock differ from what is the standard. If it wasn't for this I would have given one star more, because the set itself is great.

Great Entry to Smash Up
I have friends who love Smash Up and own almost the entire collection. The basics of smash up make for a pretty quick and fun gameplay loop. It’s similar to a deck builder except you have a pre built deck so the strategy is only in how you play those cards and on which bases (control points used to score). The artwork on the cards is great and it’s fun to see all of the Marvel characters they’ve included. As stated it plays relatively quick for a deck game so it doesn’t require a ton of time commitment. If you’re like me and found Smash Up interesting but overwhelming then this is a good starting point. Instead of getting more Smash Up I will likely just get the Marvel line if any others were released. For gamers who are already fans of Smash Up it’s even more fun to add into the mix!

For some reason, this game is easily approachable and yet offers enough tactical and strategic room that there is a lot more to this game than luck.
