You've died. It happens to the best of us. As you sit in the waiting room of the afterlife, you have time to reflect; from the looks of it, you'll have awhile. The gray faces around you look like they have been waiting for an eternity. Is that person wearing . . . a toga? Music pipes in from an unknown source, as drab as the surroundings. You think about taking a nap, but then in that haze of boredom and sleepiness you ask yourself, "Who am I? How did I get here?"
You don't remember.
Your number is called. You don't know how long you've sat waiting, or when you grabbed a ticket, but you shuffle to the desk and wait to receive the judgement of your life. But then, what if there was unfinished business you needed to resolve? And what if that business directly involves how your life was unexpectedly cut short? You're sent back to the living, to resolve these questions, if only you could remember who you were . . .
The Revenant Society: The Endless Loop Beneath the City is a roleplaying game (RPG) for two to four players actin as the Revenants, and one Fate Weaver (game master) leading the story. Starting in either 1910's Paris or 1920's New York, Revenants work together to navigate the thin veil between themselves and the living, unravel the mystery of why they haven't moved on, and prevent the Shattering Event from happening. If they do not solve the mystery before it happens, they will start the Time Loop over again. Resetting the clock may be helpful because the details of the Revenants' life are hazy, and each time they jump back to the beginning, they remember more.
Revenant s use time and moves to hunt down leads in the form of Memories that emerge from tehri rotting synapses. Those memories help create the non-playable characters (NPCs) that will give them clues as to what happened to them. But there is danger - Watchers, malevolent undead beings, trapped between life and Limbo - will try to prevent the Revenants from succeeding. Fail too many times, and they will be stuck in that loop forever, doomed to repeat those same events with no hope of eternal rest! The afterlife is the only the beginning.
