Atiwa @ 34:00

The Atiwa Range is a region of southeastern Ghana in Africa consisting of steep-sided hills with rather flat summits and is home to many an endangered species. In a nearby town, the mayor is causing a stir by giving shelter to a large number of fruit bats in his own garden. He has recognized the great value the animals have in deforested regions: Fruit bats sleep during the day and take off at sunset in search of food, looking for fruit trees miles away. On their way home, they excrete the seeds of the consumed fruit, disseminating them across large areas.

Just like that mayor, in this game, you will develop a community near the Atiwa Range, creating housing for new families and sharing your newly gained knowledge on the importance of fruit bats have for the environment. Acquire new land, manage your animals and resources, and make your community prosper. The player who best balance the needs of their town and the environment wins.

1. Place workers on action spaces and carry out their effects.

2. Grow your town by building houses and adding new land.

3. Collection resources responsibly to lessen the burden on the environment.

4. Fruit bats fly and grow new trees

Baby Feast

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

Atiwa is very fun, has a lot of feast for odin vibes, but much lighter. I am a huge Uwe fan, and I honestly think I could probably introduce this game to select family members. Definitely intro plus difficulty, on the same difficulty level as wingspan I'd say. The play is interesting, and I love all the different solo mode challenges.

Great Worker Placement Game

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

A great worker placement option and a lighter game option compared to some other Uwe Rosenberg games.

Atiwa - a satisfying play

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Atiwa is a game that has several elements that I really like in my games. It is a worker placement game and unlike some of Rosenberg's games, you cannot increase your supply of workers as the game progresses. It has tableau building as you place location and terrain cards and then fill them with various items. It has a good bit of variability in set up as there are seven action tiles that are shuffled and placed prior to playing, in addition to fixed action spaces on the board. These also shift during the game which changes up options for your worker placement. Another aspect of the variability is the 36 unique terrain cards that come out randomly from game to game. This variability adds to the puzzle element of the game, working with the presented options and trying to make the most points as you create and fill an African community. Three other things that I appreciate about Atiwa are the real life environmental theme, the art is pleasant and reminds me of my time in Africa, and the solo option with additional solo challenges. I am very happy with my purchase and look forward to many more plays of this game. And I have bat meeples now! 😁

Good mid-challenge Uwe Game

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

This game will feel familiar to anyone who has played other Uwe games like A Feast for Odin or Nusfjord. It feels closer to Nusfjord in terms of complexity. There are more actions, but not overwhelming. Removing personal supply tokens to enhance your engine feels smart and thematic. There could be a feeling of sameness after enough plays, but after six solo games I'm still figuring out how to beat the solo score goal. Solo play time is about 45 minutes, though possibly down to 30 after a few more plays.

Great Light Worker Placement Game

Average rating of 4 out of 5 stars

Pretty good worker placement game. This is way lighter than Uwe's most popular games (like Agricola, Caverna, or AFFO) but in my opinion, still scratches a similar itch. This game is also way shorter than those games, taking one to two hours, and has a smaller set-up and tear-down (those that have played AFFO will know how much of a nightmare putting that game away is).

Middleweight euro - it's frickin' bats!

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Pretty neat game. It's not quite as heavy as Caverna, Agricola, Fields of Arle, etc, but it's not as light at Cottage Garden, Cave v. Cave, etc. Very middle of the road euro with a decent chunk of replayability. Very glad to have this one in my collection, solid output from Uwe Rosenberg!

A simple Uwe Rosenberg game

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Excellent game for Uwe fans. Not the most heavy but not extremely simple. It has all its staples in a very environmentally interesting theme. Graphic design is difficult to judge but in my opinion its one of the better looking of this designer

Maiden Voyage of Atiwa

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

It's been called Feast for Odin light, and while I do see DNA from both AFFO and Agricola, I think it stands on its own as a thematic optimization of both systems. Reducing the tedium of AFFO's tile placement, but expanding on the farming and animal husbandry of Agricola. Also the little bat meeples are super cute. It plays in under an hour. This is the first time the box has said 30 mins per player and it's accurate. I love the tableau/engine building here and can't wait to explore it more. It also doesn't hurt that 90% of the game is explained on the 3 square player aid cards. The most important thing is that the wife loved it and can't wait to play it again.
