Spreading its wings, the early Roman Republic came into confrontation with the might of the Carthaginian empire for dominance of the Mediterranean and North Africa. Facing the polyglot mercenary force of Carthage headed by the great Hannibal Barca, Rome turned to Publius Cornelius Scipio to lead its armies - a move which resulted in victory and the prelude to Roman expansion into one of history's greatest empires.
