Never Get Out of the Boat

Vietnam, 1964. The most wrenching US engagement of the Cold War would be far more than GI versus Charlie. It set tribesman against nationalist, Buddhist against Catholic, Mandarin against villager, and of course Northerner against Southerner - even among the Communists. As revolutionary change burned through that ancient civilization, Washington would apply its armament and its operations research. To get out, the US counterinsurgency would have to motor deeper and deeper in. In the end, culture and will would overcome technology and math and end of the primacy of industrial might in modern warfare.

Volume IV in the COIN Series dives headlong into the momentous and complex battle for South Vietnam. Renowned game designer and modern warfare expert Mark Herman joins series creator Volko Ruhnke to present a unique multi-faction treatment of the Vietnam War.Fire in the Lake takes 1-4 players on US heliborne sweeps of the jungle, Communist infiltration of the South, Trail interdiction, and air defense of the North, and then into Allied conferences, Saigon politics, graduated escalation, and the media war.

Never get out of the boat...

Average rating of 5 out of 5 stars

Wow. What an experience. Two giants of the hobby collaborating on one of the most complex conflicts in human history have created a game that immerses you deeply into the mindset of each side that took part. No other game on the Vietnam War even comes close. Yes, the game is daunting and complex, both in its broad scope and exacting mechanics with the asymmetrical factions each doing their own thing. The strategies that emerge out of the chaos will leave you with some serious AP, as you struggle with the anxiety of conflicting interests, uneasy alliances, limited resources, self-serving victory conditions, debilitating card events, etc. Ultimately though, the game leads you to a place I call, Wargamer Heaven. It's a truly beautiful and exhausting experience that stays with you. Bravo to Mark Herman and Volko Rhunke.
