March on the Drina is set in time of World War I and it covers the Balkan peninsula theater. Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Bulgaria are invading King of Serbia. The goal of the game for Central powers is to occupy all cities in Servia, while Serbia's goal is to prevent that and liberate all of its territory.

Each side has four types of units: infantry, cavalry, artillery and generals. The map is divided in hexagons and only one unit can occupy one hexagon. National military capacity is gained by controlling the cities and it is used to reinforce your armies. Each general has special abilities which are forwarded to the troops under his control. The game lasts 14 rounds max where each round represents one period of 1914-1918 conflict and that period is dedicated on one card of the Calendar and it brings special effects on one round of the game.

There are very few games about WW1 and even less about the Austro-Hungarian Front. As such, I really like the set of the game. The materials are your standard cardboard icons and chits. I would have liked some plastic materials like axis & allies and similar games but it is ok. I also like how it does have set turns and an end time as this prevents a never-ending game (like the aforementioned). It is essentially a control and production game. I do like the ability to have historical generals which will add to the combat ability of the units. I also like the history impact aspect of it as the game focuses on the Serbian front but it takes into account what happened on other fronts and this impacts the game. I like the game but I wish there was the ability to play with 2 players on the Serbian side.
