In After the Empire, you are the ruler of a small kingdom that has existed in the shadow of the empire for generations. Constantly feuding with your neighbors, you have held little power - until now. The empire has fallen, but a new threat has risen. Hordes of invaders are looting the countryside in search of spoils, and you know you are next. Unfortunately, years of constant warfare and a deep-seated hatred has made it impossible to work with your rivals. You must defend your people, build your kingdom, and rise above the rest.
After the Empire is a tower defense and worker placement game for 2-4 players. You'll be recruiting refugees, gathering resources and fortifying your defenses in order to prepare for assault after assault of invaders seeking to sack your castle and take its riches.

Castle-Wrecking Mayhem!
We really, REALLY love this game. All of the gameplay options, from tower defense, to worker placement, to building your benefits through card purchases really make this game shine. Plus there is just something awesome about the toy factor of building your castle and then warding off hoards of invaders that is exceedingly tense and enjoyable. Every game we've played has been a close one, with wins usually coming by a coin or three. It also scales well for all of the recommended player counts. However, 3-4 player is definitely the most fun, at least for us. All in all, a great game. We've even backed the new Gamefound campaign to get the upgraded components. We are fully bought in to the crazy :)

Not your typical dry Euro
Definitely a euro but the castle defense portion is a very interesting addition that makes it stand out. The money being victory points has been done before but the threat level being tied to it as well also adds a whole new level to the decision space. Excellent game! The only down side is there are a lot of pieces and it can be a bit fiddly. As a rule, I generally do not like that in a game, but this game is an exception.

Not for me
LOVED the idea and look of After the Empire when I first saw it featured on The Dice Tower. When I played it, though, I found the worker placement portion of the game to be pretty bland and uninteresting and the siege portion of the game to be a little convoluted and fiddly. The board also takes up a TON of space, pretty unnecessarily. It probably could have easily been at least 25%-50% smaller.
